Although, 2022 saw a recovered face. After two years of struggle, things started to look back in shape. And when we are discussing this, the tremors of a probable return are around the corner. But should we be worried? Let’s find out.

What CEDCOSS aims?

CEDCOSS has been an active player in all walks of life. We have ensured agile movement across important domains that can impact the bigger picture inside and outside its premises. Like with Covid or maintaining basic hygiene around us. We are believers in supporting a healthier space.

When covid-19 locked us in, our hybrid working culture helped us grow even in trying times. And when personal hygiene concerns mounted, we took it up our sleeves to clean. All done to further our cultural values of health and hygiene first.

This is where we now throw the light on our collective initiative.

How we stepped up for the vaccination drive?

By the time you are reading this, more than 90% of Indian adults are fully vaccinated against covid-19 in India. All because of a joint effort the Indian government took with all the industries.

While at the very beginning, the jabs were administered through registrations via CoWIN (Government application for Covid measures). The government allowed employers of both private and public sectors to initiate and conduct vaccination drives. But ensure all the guidelines are rolled out.

We became one such employer. Where we conducted the vaccination drive in association with Sahara Hospitals. Keeping in mind all the safety protocols. The vaccines (available via Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech) were procured with the hospital’s team.

We maintained social distancing to prevent the spread and sanitation during the course of the drive. And we also ensured the following things for maximum participation. 

• Vaccinated the employees on our premises
• Reimbursed vaccination amount for those getting vaccinations elsewhere
• Provided care and necessary monetary backup (if needed)
• Thrived with the work-from-home culture 

We also made sure to complete the two doses of vaccinations within the premises. And joined the nation in being the 2nd country to complete 2 billion covid jabs.

Why we conducted the drive?

The vaccination drive’s intention was to ensure a safe workforce. To be careful and protective of our workforce’s health and hygiene. When the pandemic became severe in 2021, the health alarms were terrifying. Losing out on family, friends, and closer associates came to us as a complete shock.

So when the lockdown eased, and vaccination became available for adults, we decided to safeguard our team. Because only then could we think of moving forward. Together with everyone.

We became one among the 70% of employers who stopped people from joining the premise until fully vaccinated. To avoid being spreaders of the deadly virus attack. As mere soap and water couldn’t be the only guard.

CEDCOSS moves out for cleanliness 

Right after things started to take shape in 2021, we were more inclined than ever to ensure safe and hygienic surroundings for everyone sharing the same air.

Because although the frequency of cases subsided, the concern was around. And why just for covid, isn’t this our moral responsibility to take charge of the space we use freely?

Looking day in and day out at how manual scavenging and rag-picking were hurting the health of so many. We became more resolute in the idea to ensure a trash-less surrounding for all.

So we picked up the brooms and walked to the open land beside our premises to curb the situation by a fraction.

This also comes in the wake of horrid statistics that say 3 sanitation workers die at work every 5 days. And health hazards for rag-pickers are only surmounting. In addition, initiatives like these transform behavioral patterns promoting healthy practices for all involved. Because health and hygiene is always a surmounting concern.

Besides, the central government has also taken apt initiatives under its Swachh Bharat campaign, inspiring us further to take this up.

And we did it! Together with the support of the entire CEDCOSS team.

Why we chose the occasion of Diwali?

Every year it is customary in our households to clean homes before the festival of Diwali (festival of lights) arrives. We do it to bring prosperity to our homes. This is why we chose the pious day of Dhanteras to clean our vicinity. Because prosperity shouldn’t only be restricted to our concrete boundaries. Right?

To further spread awareness on occasion, we mobilized the team with insightful messages. Provided resources for cleaning and jolted enthusiasm for the noble cause.

The clean space after the drive made our efforts look totally worth it!

The aim for the days to come

CEDCOSS never shies away from taking initiatives that leave a lasting impression. More so, with good intent. We have been coming ahead with philanthropic activities only to light a selfish notion of seeing the world in a better sight.

Be it charitable shares, mindful donations, or securing complete well-being. We are trying to do what best we can pull off.

Because it is not about the big gestures but small initiatives that are impactful in real. Signing off this time in hopes of doing more good in a better way to drive out the best.

World blood donor day is an initiation by World Health Organization. Where every year’s celebration aims at raising awareness about the need for safe blood transfusion. While also recognizing the efforts of unpaid donors and blood donor organizations. This year, we at CEDCOSS also pledged to join this force of donors. But before we dive into how we commemorated the day, let’s learn more about blood donation.

Why blood donation?

Blood has a minimal shelf life. Once it is out of your body, storing and safekeeping the blood becomes difficult. And after some time, it does become unusable. That is why a constant supply of blood has to be ensured. Since hospitals handle a range of emergencies and regular cases that require frequent blood supply.

Hence, as a community stepping up for this life saving cause becomes essential. 

The need for Blood Donation 

Every 2 seconds, someone needs blood. This makes it all the more necessary for us to identify the need among the target group for timely access to safe blood via blood donation. 

We believe that accidental cases require it the most, but that’s not it.

We have: 

• Cancer patients
• Orthopedic patients post and during surgery
• Heart ailment surgeries 
• Patients with blood disorders
• Burn patients 
• Sickle cell patients 

Since the need for blood supply is always there. Being a blood donor in such cases can help us save the lives of many. And that’s why we did our bit.

Our mission this blood donation day

As an organization, we always put our best foot forward in our core working domain. But that’s not all we intend to do. Our very name holds ‘community’ (Community Engaged in Development and Customization of Open Source Software) and giving back to that is as essential as any professional undertaking. Luckily, our community has been fortunate to have people who understand this mission. And participate wholeheartedly.

The blood donation drive was a part of that mission, where we want to give back to the community that lets us thrive. Actively or passively, a genuine act of goodwill has helped us all, in some way or other.

 If we are able to run the show it’s because we have been fortunate to do so. Then why not use all that’s in our power to see the picture beyond our limits? We understood this essence. And made it a point for this day to celebrate the goodwill, that’s everyone’s share.

Stepping up for blood donation day

The need for blood donation has always been visible to CEDCOSS. Apart from doing it on a regular basis. We decided to pull off mass voluntary blood donation. Specifically on a day that raises mass awareness. That’s why we chose blood donation day.

An exciting bunch of 60+ people from our CEDCOSS community stepped in for the day. While many more were in the queue, but to time constraints, and the medical team being packed for the day. This was all from CEDCOSS.  We enabled the blood donation drive with the help of expert staff from Apollo Medics Hospitals. Who took all the right precautions. And shared with us the post-blood donation care.

From our Director to our first employees, the lot was an absolute CEDCOSS mix for the day.

To capsule the day in a few words, our colleague, Srijan Jaiswal, recounts it, saying,

“The blood of all humans is what holds them together, regardless of where they come from. As a result, creating more blood relations will do more good than harm.

COVID-19 distanced us so much that we could do nothing more than pray for the known and unknown. And once things got back to normal in 2022, we decided to convert prayers into actions because if you know, you could save someone’s life within 15 minutes, why not do it? Our corporate family embraced our DONATION DRIVE idea wholeheartedly, and the energy level and excitement were evident on the day of the event. 

In all fairness, I was not surprised since Cedcossians have always shown their zeal when CEDCOSS stands for a cause.”

Not to forget, we spread the word with a slogan that resonated with everyone alike.

We informed all our colleagues about the same a week before. Plus, all these participants came up voluntarily! In addition, we received an honorary mention by Hindustan and The Tribune(Lucknow) in their newspapers.

Moreover, we captured the happy blood donors and shared some delightful goodies as a token of appreciation. 

While our team came forward on the day. We ensured that we learned all the right things about the blood donation process, its types, and essential tips.

Elucidating more on this CEDCOSS corporate responsibility

CEDCOSS pledges to take strides in the direction of fulfilling these social responsibilities. We have been taking small but important steps in this line of thought for quite some time now. Be it standing for the right cause, where we undertook the responsibility of ensuring empowered women staff by taking the calls for their health.  Or sharing joys in small pockets with the often emotionally neglected. We are doing what we can.

And we don’t wish to stop here. We want to participate more, do more and learn better. Because there is so much out there that needs to be done. We may not be able to do it all but if a fraction of it improves, then we will find our duties well done.

Since this drive was aimed at responsible blood donation, here’s us leaving you with a very important piece of information on who can and who cannot donate blood.

Requirements for blood donation

Not all of us are equally eligible to donate blood. We learned the difference between who can and who cannot donate blood. Here’s looking at the differentiation.

Who can:

• An individual who is above the age of 17 up to 65 years.
• Has weight ranging from 50 to 158 kgs.
• Suitable veins present for drawing out blood
• Should be fit and well 

Who cannot:

• Have had cancer
• A carrier for either Hepatitis B/ Hepatitis C
• HIV positive patients 
• Suffering from heart ailments
• Had organ transplant
• Had blood transfusion before 1st January 1980
• Injected non-prescribed drugs either for body-building or for other reasons

Penning down 

So yes, we did celebrate goodwill this blood donation day. We also made it a point to raise awareness rightfully and encourage regular blood donors. Good health and prosperity are everyone’s share. If a small effort contributes to the greater good, then there’s no harm.

We have been fortunate to contribute to this act. Many a time, we have colleagues raising urgent requirements for blood donation. And we have done all we could then. Seeing the need at all times, doing this drive on a memorable day helped us spread the word beyond our reach. Taking this initiative was also a reflection of our bonds and solidarity. Besides, we are genuinely grateful to Apollo Medics Hospitals and our entire CEDCOSS family to make this initiative a great success.

Here we take a look at a few critical misses. The senior citizens and the slum dwellers who suffer a significant setback with the experience of emotional neglect in the quest of maintaining healthy relationships. We, therefore, attempt to look at their situation, both emotionally and in reality.

What are the most important elderly needs and wants?

Often while interacting with elders in the presence of their young kids or grandkids. We communicate with the latter. Because it gets assumed that they aren’t capable anymore of acting and speaking on their behalf.

Definitely a wrong notion. And it’s time we check our actions. As most of them are capable of conducting themselves. And just like us, they don’t want to be identified only by the age/ ‘senior’ tag among the family members and in general.

Therefore, seniors who are socially isolated or lack social/ family relationships are at a higher risk of developing suicidal thoughts and anxiety.

This brings us to reading about these needs and wants,

• Financial Security to feel safe
• Healthcare and support
• Companionship and maintained relationships 
• A pleasing social community
• Food for a balanced lifestyle 
• Physical activity to remain agile 
• Respect and exchange of decent pleasantries
• A comforting routine 
• Ensured comfort 
  And lastly, 
• Independence to maintain their dignity and esteem.

When we see them, we feel it’s nothing extraordinary, but it becomes so as people age. This is what they prioritize.

Myths young people have about senior citizens

We have a decorated notion of old, where we often forget they are no different. They have experienced all the phases we do now. This leads us to believe some false notions like:

• Driving skills decline over age, sure eyesight might suffer. But a good section remains capable of driving well.

• Liking for physical appearance becomes less, 

• They are not internet-friendly. 70% of older people use Facebook daily! Often leading to the overuse of social media.

This is just one-half that seeks healthy relationships. There’s another aspect that demands our attention.

What we don’t know about the slum children?

17% of urban India are slum dwellers, according to a report by Times of India. At the same time, India also comprises 25% of the world’s total children’s death rate.

Lack of healthcare and proper lookout serves as the main concerns for this situation.

Metropolitized lives have also impacted generic overview. We don’t have the time to look around. The work, the crowd, and the hustle keep us going. While many slum children walk around streets starved, begging. And living in neglected conditions.

With a general lack of:

• Proper Sanitation
• Safe drinking water
• Safe habitat 

And in our country, slums are seen through the poverty alleviation lens. However, we have policies like Urban Local Bodies for poverty relief. And Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for improving the quality of life in urban dwellings. But compassion is what’s lacking. Things happen on paper, but the look cast on them is shameful.

A small change can be infused with the following:

• How we talk to them 
• How the discussion about them happens at home, at the dinner table
• The treatment we met out to our domestic help 

Cultivating healthy relationships shouldn’t be limited to only our peers and workmates. But also to the community, we share with tons of diverse groups. Only when we sensitize ourselves can we see beyond our territory.

All these can only then pull us from the cocoon of privilege. We at CEDCOSS just took a step in initiating this sensitization. With our ideas and collective team efforts, this is how we pulled ourselves closer to the idea.

How we stepped up for cultivating these healthy relationships

Samarpan old age home visit

We are only a speck to fulfilling the needs and the wants we just discussed for them. All we could do was bring some fun times. And social spirits up for the lovely people of Samarpan old age home in Lucknow.

Although it was a day spent, the warmth received was enough for us to retreat. Accompanied by our health and lifestyle expert, Dr. Shobhit, we packed the day with an insightful lifestyle discussion. Which was then followed by a Q&A session.

We got them sweet savories and engaged in a fun singing session.

Along with, smiling photos and vivid interactions that were around. They even sketched their favourite moments or anything of their delight for us.

The day went by quickly because the spirit of the place was very lively. The wrinkled smiles were not dull but full of life and lessons. In addition, we also thanked the management and staff of Samarpan Old Age home. Who ensured the day’s pleasant course for all of us.

While we also learned what cultivating healthy relationships for the emotionally neglected meant. Because at the core of it all, they only seek compassion, love, and respect. Something that should be irrespective of age.

Spreading smiles to the slum-dwelling children

Diwali is a festival of sweets, delights, and lights. But lights this time was not limited to our gates. We shared them with the slum children in association with Sarthak Foundation.

Moreover, we shared the joys of crackers, sweets, and Diwali lights with the kids. The interaction was charged with liveliness and fun. Time went by with playing and clicking fun pictures. And loads of laughter!

All thanks to Sarthak Foundation, we pulled this off with great success.

Neki ka Dibba

The time and tide wait for none. But for how long? Sometimes all we need is to sit and look around. This is what we did with ‘NEKI KA DIBBA’ or the ‘Blessing Bag.’ Where we welcomed donations from our mini CEDCOSS community. Be it money, woolens, books, or stationary. Everyone came forward to share the joys of Christmas for the slum dwellers.

But we cannot take the credit alone. If not for Sarthak Foundation again, we wouldn’t have pulled off with this magnitude. Besides, they guided us to the slums around Chinhat locality and helped us with the distribution. There were woolens, toys, and necessary stationery. And, of course, lots of new stuff for making it warm in the harsh winters of Lucknow.

They received it with love too! There was warmth in the eyes and smiles in the parched faces. And with a well-equipped hand like Sarthak Foundation, we felt our step reached the right place.

Moreover, we took out the blessing bag again this year. This time in association with the Karunansh Foundation to reach out to another group of children to share our care.  We ventured in the thawing month of December. At a time when cold waves become brutal for our receivers.

We collected goodies across three branches and distributed them among the children; food, clothing, toys, and necessary aiding funds.

Taking out the Neki Ka Dibba is now becoming a yearly ritual we are proud to pull off. And not to forget, our dedicated team members came forward in every possible way. It is with this collective cooperation we handled the overwhelming warmth.

This one is for all who believe in the CEDCOSS dream of a harmonized community! 

Penning Down

This is not a sum up, but only a beginning. A beginning to the changed lens. The modified lens in cultivating healthy relationships for the emotionally neglected.

What began as a study of understanding led us to take steps for a better world. We are happy that we started. But we are not content. CEDCOSS has been community first and will always keep doing that. Because we believe in being CEDCOSSforACause.

How menstruation affects women?

Proper menstrual hygiene management empowers women. We say so because lack of appropriate sanitation leads to dropping out of schools, quitting jobs, and whatnot. Alone in India, this lack among 355 million menstruating women leaves 12% of them without any menstrual products or aid.

This further leads them to experience grave situations like vaginosis. That is often caused by using harmful things like plastic bags, rags, or even ash during menstruation. Moreover, 367 million children do not have sanitation facilities in their schools, forcing them to drop out.

Forced rather than chosen, all this pushes them further into undertaking domestic duties. Of which women do 335 minutes of unpaid care work compared to 40 mins of work done by men. That is, 8x times more care work than men.

But that’s not it for the uneducated class. Women across all age groups and education levels deliver more care work. The disparity is highlighted here.

This further adds to the severe stress level, that women undergo throughout their life. (See fig. 2)
While this is prevalent, many women, especially young adolescents, highly lack menstrual hygiene knowledge. Contributing to it are:
Stigma about discussion
The taboo associated with period blood
Limited opportunities to discuss it
Limited social interactions

This lack was studied among the slum dwellers in Lucknow. Highlighting the graveness in our closest vicinity.
The intention here is simple, to highlight how one biological phenomenon affects the growth and development of almost half of our population.

How menstruation empowers women?

So far, we have seen how it affects. But how does menstruation and women empowerment go together? A biological activity, if treated well, can miraculously transform things for such women.
While 45% of women cannot make decisions concerning their reproductive and sexual health, more inclusivity and discussion amongst men, women and trans alike can sensitize the situation for all.

Only then can we achieve a certain level of gender equality. Otherwise, we can never subside the fact that 42% of women still face period shaming. 

If proper menstruation tools are provided (like sanitary pads, menstrual cups, and tampons), then women get empowered at
Workplace
Schools
Universities/ Colleges,
And other corporate/ private bodies.

This improves their overall representation. While the biological process no more hinders the avenues they wish to pursue.

Women-focused, Women-led initiatives

90% of the companies have at least one woman representing a senior managerial position. But just one? How is that justified? We at CEDCOSS studied all these parameters before deciding on a venture for women. The following come since we as an organization felt the need to do what’s right. Not just work-wise but overall.

Sanitary Napkin Dispenser

A menstrual emergency can occur anywhere, anytime. Because sadly, they don’t knock and come. In place of that understanding, and ensuring that our female staff stays safe and healthy during the tough days. We installed a sanitary napkin dispenser on our office premises.
A move that was well-thought-over and welcomed by all the members alike. 

The dispenser has been installed for our female staff on the go. That is, whenever they need, they can collect one on their way either into the office or before leaving.
Our staff has appreciated the installation. Since many-a-times, we heard them calling it a day or facing difficulty in seeking a sanitary napkin within the premises. With this installation, things have become better for them at work.

Food and Fitness day for women

Women are the primary caregivers, and we know that. There’s no shaking it off our heads. But what these primary caregivers do is often miss out on their very health.
Something none can afford. This led us to organize a virtual session for our women on food and fitness day. With heavy participation, we welcomed an informative interaction in association with Dr. Ekta, Gynaecologist from Apollo hospitals.

The hour-long session witnessed our employees being educated on the following:
-Cervical cancer
-Breast cancer
-Vaccinations for cervical cancer
-The importance of short but fruitful exercise
-Addressing myths and Taboos around women’s reproductive health.

While the light was also thrown on subjects concerning using the right menstrual tools. Our employees also broke into discussions about the discomforts they faced or continue to face. Moreover, many were asked to regulate their gynecologist visits because something minor becomes major in no time.
All the attendees also ensured to share their tips and practices for healthy living. At the same time, learned what the speaker of the hour shared.

Sanitary Napkin distribution

9 out of 10 girls are not aware of basic menstrual knowledge. At the same time, many are hesitant to ask even the bare minimum questions that concern them.
On the other hand, period poverty pushes young girls away from education and employment. Where failure to acquire
Menstrual tools
Basic sanitation
Access to healthcare
Paints a gruesome picture.

This then mobilized our movements and drove us to conduct a Napkin Donation Drive for adolescent girls in an orphanage here in Lucknow. We were accompanied by Dr. Ritu Saxena, who ensured the correct information gets circulated among these girls. More the merrier was the occasion with our volunteers on Menstrual Hygiene Day.

We did this to strengthen women who receive absolutely no guidance on menstrual conduct. This shouldn’t have been our concern outside our office, but no, it is our concern. As responsible members of society who care. Care for apt representation and upliftment of the women folk.

The picture we see today has been around for years. It’s only in the coming years things that are getting widespread attention. Thanks to the internet age and media. And before it’s too late, make sure the proper care and move reach them at the right point. Because this is all, we aimed for with our collective efforts. For women of CEDCOSS and around.

For someone at the orphanage, today’s distribution will serve her for many tomorrows. Which would have faded in harsh lights.

Parting words

We are only trying. To address the prevalent issues and become a better version of ourselves each day. Because change is a continuous process. And Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Gender inequality has become deeply infused in our systems. Small bits and recognitions will be the only saviors. Trying is all we are doing in this process of unlearning.

This is just one of many steps. And we want to take as many as we can!

This will be the 3rd disbursement of the Innovation funds. The prime focus of this round marks as the pool now increased with vamping of 60%.

“Today’s grants support innovative businesses across Europe to develop the cutting-edge technologies we need to drive the green transition. The Innovation Fund is an important tool to scale up innovations in renewable hydrogen and other solutions for European industry. Compared to the first disbursement round, the funds available have increased by 60%, enabling us to double the number of projects supported. This is a big boost for the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industry in the European Union.”

Vision Behind the Innovation Funds

Innovation Funds focused on innovative technological advancements that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These programs are designed in such a way that industries are benefitted with a lot more funds in a flexible and easygoing approach. 

Under this, Big flagship projects will be given funds that can endow a spirit of European value additions with emission reductions taken into consideration.

Sectors and Locations benefitting from the 3rd disbursement of Innovation Funds

The target is to bring revolutionary technologies to the market. The proceedings ahead will counter the following sectors

• Energy-intensive industries
• Hydrogen
• Renewable energy
• Carbon capture and storage infrastructure
• Manufacturing of key components for energy storage and renewables

The projects will be having following locations 

• Bulgaria
• Finland
• France
• Germany
• Iceland
• Netherlands
• Norway
• Poland
• Sweden

Projects Under consideration!

This time the EU has not only increased the funds by 60% but also there is a vast increase in the number of projects that are under the roof. Initially, the fund allotted was €1.1 Billion which was considered for 7 projects, but this disbursement marks new heights with a €1.8 Billion investment for catering to 17 projects in all. 

The projects bifurcation is as follows

Cement:- 

We have 4 projects here. One in each, Germany, Poland, France, and Bulgaria. 

Chemicals:- 

Contains 3 projects, one in Finland and two in Sweden. 

Hydrogen:- 

Has 3 projects all located in the Netherlands. 

Refineries:- 

Grabbing 2 projects, each in Norway and Sweden.

Manufacturing of components for energy storage or renewables production:- 

Have 3 projects in the bucket. One in Poland and two in France!

Renewable energy:- 

Has 1 project located in the German part of the north sea. This project will construct and operate an offshore wind farm. 

Carbon capture and storage infrastructure:- 

Contains one project in Iceland for building an onshore carbon mineral storage terminal. 

So, these are all 17 clean tech flagship projects which will be running under these funds payout.

All the projects will be collectively targeting the lowering of the greenhouse gases in the working fields of production, distribution, and use of

• Green hydrogen
• Waste-to-hydrogen
• Offshore wind 
• Manufacturing of photovoltaic (PV) modules
• Battery storage and recycling
• Carbon capture and storage
• Sustainable aviation fuels
• Advanced biofuels.

The selection procedure of these projects is also done by neutral and independent Experts. They have expertise in the reduction of carbon emissions gases when set side by side with the orthodox patterns of functionality.
